"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable.
They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."

"Bijou"

Bijou is a sweet black/rust female who is approximately 2 years old. She was found wondering alone in a New Orleans neighborhood. She was scared and very thin. She was held by the LA-SPCA for her owners but they never came for her. Bijou is heartworm positive but is scheduled for treatment soon. She's been spayed, is up-to-date on shots and has been microchipped. Bijou is adjusting to her new foster home and is very loving and appreciative of her new bed and regular meals. She is becoming very playful and is excited about the prospect of having a new home of her very own. As you can see, she is very pretty and has a great coat. She loves to give kisses and enjoys toys. If you are interested in Bijou (which means Jewel), please fill out our on-line application.

"Harriet"

Hi my name is Harriet. I'm only about 7 months old but was found in a local kill shelter with my friend Ozzy who is about 9 months old. I was scared to death and very emaciated. You ask why a beautiful pure pup like me was in an animal shelter? Well you see there are many of us. Look in you paper and see how many pure bred puppies are on the market day after day after day after day. Can you imagine that there are enough good homes for us all? Me and my beautiful friends here at Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue are proof that there are not. People want to gain a few dollars and apparently don't care how they do it. Or maybe they just want one puppy to keep - so they sell the rest of us to whoever steps forward with a little money. Sure, they say they will take care of us but look at how long that lasted with me. I'm a lucky one. I may have had some rough times but now I will be adopted into a wonderful home who will love me and take care of me for all my life. I haven't found that home yet - but I will. I'm sure things are looking up for me now. If you are interested in adopting a very sweet little dobie puppy and having a velcro friend for life - please fill out an on-line application and mention my name. By the time my adoption process is done, I'll be spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on shots. I also come with a full tank of LOVE for no extra charge.

this is what Harriet looked like at the shelter

"BluBelle"

BluBelle is a 4-5 year old blue, cropped and docked female. She was surrendered by her original family to a shelter stating that they could no longer take care of her. BluBelle became very ill while at the shelter with pneumonia and it was questionable for a while whether she could be saved. But GCDR pulled her and kept her in ICU at our vet's office for two weeks and this gorgeous girl made it. She is now happily in a wonderful foster home receiving the care and love she deserves. BluBelle is spayed, heartworm free, microchipped and up-to-date on shots. This gorgeous girl is now ready for a home of her own. Might that be yours?

"Kinsey"

This beautiful girl is Kinsey. Kinsey is approximately 5 years old and a petit little thing weighing approximately 50 pounds. She was once offered up on Craig's List as a "free to good home" dog. We wanted to see that Kinsey had an opportunity to have a "great" home and not just go to the first person who showed up to take her. Kinsey has heartworms and problems with her feet. She is scheduled to be spayed and then will undergo treatment for her heartworms while we are trying to clear up her painful and swollen feet. She is very calm but has a beautiful spark in her eyes promising that some lucky family is going to have a dog that adores them, is easy to please and appreciates everything you do for her. Kinsey charmed several children at the vet's office who got down on the floor with her and rubbed her belly (one of her favorite things). She would be a great dog for a family with children. The people at the vet's office could not believe that this beautiful girl is actually in rescue looking for a home. If you are interested in adopting Kinsey, please fill out our on-line application.

"Diva"

Diva and her sister Bette were found by a lady under a bridge in New Orleans. They are approximately 1 year old and are both fawn girls. They were thin and had severely swollen feet and sore pads from their days trying to survive alone on the streets of New Orleans. Who could have just dumped these two babies? And sadly they are both heartworm positive even at their young age. The lady took them home and then asked us to take them and find them a permanent home. Diva and Bette are two beautiful girls with gorgeous soulful eyes. They are on the small side but at their young age may grow more. They have sweet dispositions and are enjoying having guaranteed meals twice a day, toys and a soft bed to sleep in - inside and not out in the elements. You can see from one of the photos that this beautiful girl's feet are still recovering from her ordeal. But she will make a full recovery and be good as new soon. Diva is a little smaller than her sister and slightly more shy. Both girls are easy to handle and will do anything you ask. Please watch for future updates on Diva and her sister

"Molly"

Hi my name is Molly. I'm only about 10 months old and a brand new member of Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue. I know you are probably shocked by my BEFORE photo but I think its important for people to know my story so that hopefully another dog doesn't have to go where I have been. I was left tied up at a local vet's office overnight. Unfortunately for me, the people who had me before let me go way too long without a vet visit. I have something called Demodectic Mange. It is VERY treatable with an inexpensive medication and very little vet care. It begins with small patches of lost hair but if left untreated can get way out of hand - which of course is what happened to me. Just look at my poor face - you could hardly recognize me as a dog - much less a beautiful Doberman Pinscher puppy. The vet that found me took care of me. My face was swollen and painful and I was oh so miserable for a few weeks. But now I've been on my medication for a while and look at how much I've improved. I'll continue to take my medicine until my hair is completely grown back. As you can see, as the layers of neglect are peeled away - the beautiful little puppy that I am is beginning to shine thru. I'm no longer in pain and miserable. In fact, I'm a playful and energetic little girl. I've been given a new lease on life and I'm so thankful to the wonderful vet who took care of me until there was a space for me in rescue. I'm going to just enjoy life now and let my new friends look for the perfect home for me. I'm up to date on shots and heartworm free. Probably by the middle of June, I will be sporting a beautiful coat of thick black hair. I'm scheduled to be spayed soon and I will be microchipped at that time. If you think you are the home for me - please fill out an on-line application and I'll have my people contact you.

Update

Molly is officially ready for her forever home. She has been spayed, vetted and microchipped and just needs that special place to call home. She has become a beautiful, sweet little delicate girl. She is very playful and enjoys playing with other dogs, large and small. In her foster home she currently lives with several large males and she holds her own, even though she is the smallest of the group. Molly is working on learning basic obedience and house manners and has come a long way from the scared little puppy she was when she first arrived. She already knows a few commands and is eager to learn more. She does very well in her kennel and is not a barker. Molly still has a lot of puppy in her and has a great since of humor. Her confidence is growing a little everyday and the memories of her past life are behind her. She seems to always be smiling now and is one of the happiest dogs here. Molly would be perfect for a home with space concerns as she is a small girl and probably won't get much larger. So if you have been looking for that "fun size" dobe girl to run and play with, this is the girl for you.

"Shady"

Hi, my name is Shady. I'm a female albino Doberman just in from a north Louisiana shelter. My original owners could no longer care for me so they took me to the shelter. There, a nice lady made sure that Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue knew I was waiting. After a few days of living mostly in a dog igloo (and I must say, they don't do much for the heat) I was picked up and began my journey south. South only geographically speaking - I hear things are looking up for me now. I'm about 5 years old. I'm looking for my perfect forever home - which must include a lot of inside time as the fact that I'm an albino makes me sensitive to bright sun light. I have a lot of love to give and will be ready for my forever home soon . I still have to go to the vet for a full medical exam. I may have some health issues to attend to before I can be adopted. Please check back for future updates about me. And in the meantime, please read about Albino Doberman Pinschers. I am not just a white dog and I have special needs which you will have to understand before I can be yours. therefore I do need to go to an experienced home.

"MeKu"

"MeKu" is Japanese for the future, and it seemed like a good name as she was rescued at 0701 on Labor Day, exactly 59 minutes before she was scheduled to be executed in a Georgia Kill Shelter. MeKu is a great little 11 month Doby-mix, active, playful, yet with plenty of guts. She gets along well with the three other Dobermans at her foster Dad's place, and loves to play with a great big male, who sometimes gives up after being played with so thoroughly. MeKu is great with kids, other dogs and brings tears of joy to your eyes from all the laughter as you watch her antics. She is healthy, up-to-date on all her shots, heartworm negative, and a joy to be around. She is working on house/yard potty training and has almost mastered it. MeKu will make some lucky family a great pet.

"Sara"

My name is Sara and I'm a blue female Doberman Pinscher who was lucky enough to find a spot in rescue and a ride from a shelter a few parishes away to my new foster mom. I've had a hard life before getting here but something tells me things are going to be very different now. As you can see, I'm currently suffering from a severe skin infection with maybe a little mange mixed in as well. But I am now getting excellent veterinary care and hopefully I'll be looking and feeling much better soon. I'm a sweet girl who has a lot of love to give, but first I must get better. Please check back here for future updates and photos of me.

"Maci & Pups "

Maci and her pups were dumped in a field where they had to fend for themselves for a few weeks. Some people that passed by tried to help them but the dogs were too fearful to allow anyone close enough to catch them. That was probably because other people had not been so kind. When Maci, and her pups were finally plucked from the field by a very determined lady and taken to a veterinarian, it was discovered that all three were not only half starved and heartworm positive but all three had buckshot in them too. The buckshot was discovered when they were x rayed prior to beginning treatment for heartworms. We have been told that a male was also with them but he has not been found. Unfortunately he may not have survived the elements and/or the shotgun.

The wonderful lady who did not rest until the dogs were brought to safety, paid for their hospital fees and treatment while she searched for a permanent solution for these three beautiful girls. When she contacted us, we found their story so compelling, we knew immediately that we had to help. Maci, Karma and Karmin have understandably been traumatized by their horrific ordeal. But as their foster mom, I can tell you they are nothing but a pleasure to have around. They are grateful for every little thing they are given, whether it is a nice warm blanket to sleep on or a bowl of food and clean water. I love spending time with them and watching them go from three dogs that were initially frightened by the site of me to three dogs who now great me with wagging tails and smiling eyes. Please read more about them individually and consider adopting one of these girls into your own home.

"Maci"

Hi, my name is MACI and I’m an approximately 3 year old red female. My ears were cropped but not properly cared for after they were cropped and so they do not stand. I’m extremely petit with a beautiful delicate face. I’ve had a hard life up until this time and although people have been cruel to me I still do not hold a grudge. I’m a little apprehensive about approaching but I wag my tail and dance around while I work up enough courage to allow myself to be petted. But boy does a gentle hand feel good! I’m quiet in my crate and oh so happy to have a nice warm bed to sleep in. I’ve already started my heartworm treatment and when that’s done I will be spayed. I’m up-to-date on shots and will be micro-chipped at the time of my spay. I should be ready for adoption soon and if you think I might be perfect for you, please go ahead and fill out an on-line application. I’m putting my past behind me and I’m told that I will never suffer again. I’m looking forward to my new life and will reward my new family with more love than they will know what to do with.

"Karmin"

Hi, my name is KARMIN.
I’m a tiny little dobie girl, approximately 6-7 months old. My mom and sister are petit but I’m even smaller. Of the three of us, I am the most emotionally traumatized by my past experiences. I’ve come a long way in the few weeks that I’ve been here. I’m slowly learning that people can be gentle and kind. I don’t know why, but I feel that I might be the favorite of all foster dogs. My foster mom sometimes lays her head in my crate and talks to me and I confess I do give her some kisses. She smiles at me and calls me “Squirt” probably because I’m so small. When I’m in the yard with other dogs I’m the social butterfly. I just love other dogs, large and small and its clear to see that underneath my emotional scars is the heart of a clown. If you want a tiny dobie girl who would be great with other dogs and probably cats, go ahead and fill out an on-line application for me. I’m almost done with my heartworm treatment and will be spayed and micro-chipped soon and ready for my new home.

Update & new photo added:
Karmin has made huge progress in her trust issues. She now climbs up on the patio furniture with us and lays her paws across our legs while we read the paper to her. She gives soft little delicate kisses and very much enjoys being close to those she loves. Karmin is great with other dogs is cat safe and would be wonderful with children who are gentle with her. While restoring the health of a sick dog is very rewarding, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a tortured little soul begin to turn around and feel safe in the world again. As you can see from Karmin's photo, she is growing into a beautiful girl. She is nearing one year of age and is still very petite. But as we all know, sometimes the most priceless things come in small packages.

"Sophie "

This beautiful girl, Sophie, is a new arrival. Sophie is a victim of animal cruelty. She was confiscated by authorities from horrendous conditions. Sophie is one lucky girl as she was one of only 15 dogs found still alive in a huge abuse/neglect case in an outlying parish. There were reportedly 40 other animals found on the premises who had already died of starvation (including other Dobermans). The caretaker of the dogs is currently charged with felony animal cruelty and his case is slowly making its way thru the legal system. Sophie has gained 8 pounds in less than two weeks. She appears to be only about 18 -20 months old but looks like she's had more than one litter of puppies in her short life. Although her coat is still a little tattered from her days of just trying to survive, we can already see that she will sport a gorgeous blue coat with proper diet and care. She has large beautiful amber eyes that pierce right thru you with love and gratitude. Sophie is heartworm positive and will be undergoing treatment soon. She will also be spayed ,micro-chipped and up-to-date on shots before being placed in a permanent home. Please watch for future updates for Sophie.

Update:

Because of Sophie's previous living conditions she was very scared when she first arrived however that fear is completely gone now and she is becoming an awesome pet. Sophie is young but mature for her age, she is very smart and learns fast. She has already crate trained and learned sit. She is currently going through her heartworm treatment and has already been spayed and microchipped. At first Sophie was not amused by the other dogs but in the two weeks she has been here she has learned to play and have fun and now she runs with the pack. She is getting along well with both the large and small dogs and now only has complaints if they approach her while she is in her kennel. Hopefully that too will disappear with time and training. Sophie is also working on her house manners and is on her way to being housebroken. She is very polite and loves to cuddle. She has been very loving from day one which is amazing considering all she has been through. Sophie is also a small girl and probably wont get much larger so for families with space concerns she is a nice fun size. Sophie's hair is starting to grow in and we cant wait to see how much more this girl will progress. She is a strikingly beautiful girl with a ton of personality, we hope she will be ready for adoption by November. Look for updates as we get to know her more and her personality blossoms.
