"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable.
They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."

"Bonnie Blue"

Bonnie Blue is a blue natural eared female doberlady who we believe to be about 3-4 years old. Boy what a story she has! She was found giving birth in a lady's yard. Imagine not having a home of your own and needing a place to have your babies. The lady felt sorry for her and kept her there with her pups for a few days while she desperately tried to find a solution for Bonnie. We arranged for our volunteers to pick Bonnie and her pups up and foster them for a short stay while we tried to find someone who could help Bonnie raise those EIGHT pups. A wonderful lady did just that and we are happy to report that with tender loving care the cute little puppies found their way to an all breed rescue when they were old enough to be weened. Now its Bonnie's turn. She's back with GCDR recuperating from motherhood! And she's already started treatment for heart worms, courtesy of one of the volunteers who has helped foster her. Bonnie is such a nice girl. She is a little timid around other dogs and "thinks" they don't see her hiding in my butterfly garden. But they know she's there and are just giving her time to see that no harm will come to her with this crew. She's most happy just to chill out with me alone, crossing her legs like a proper lady. She is extremely obedient and gentle and enjoying getting all the attention she can get. Our guess is that Bonnie would be a great dog with children. She is good with little dogs and we will cat test her soon. While we don't know what happened to Bonnie prior to finding her giving birth, we can assume that she's had a pretty rotten start. She seems very happy to be with us and we will enjoy her company until we find the perfect home for her.

"Kalei"

This is Kalei (we pronounce it Cali). The name is Hawaiian and means "the beloved" or "flower wreath". Kalei is a youngster, probably less than two years old. Her ears are cropped and she has the most exquisite blue coat we've ever seen. Just gorgeous. Kalei was found tied outside a vet's office by the morning staff. She had been left there sometime during the night by persons unknown. The vet knew us very well as she had also found our dear (now adopted) Molly tied outside her office too. The vet boarded Kalei until we could make room for her. Kalei is up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative, spayed and microchiped. She does have an old leg injury which does not seem to slow her down one bit. We are having it x-rayed and will post more about the leg once we can talk to our vet. Kalei is ready for a home of her own. She would be great with other dogs and possibly with cats (we will test her soon). She would love a home that is fairly easy going and will let her come out of her shyness at her own pace. She has already made great progress in the short time she has been with us. If you are interested in adopting Kalei, please fill out one of our on-line applications.

"Sahara"

Hi, my name is Sahara. I'm an approximately five year old fawn female dobie lady. Please excuse my skinny bones. I wasn't always this thin. Once I was a beautiful plump puppy waiting for the right home to take me home. But unfortunately I didn't get a good home and as you can see I've had a pretty rough time. The best day of my life was when I was given up to an animal shelter. Volunteers of GCDR picked me up and now I'm living in a nice place. I have a soft bed in an air-conditioned room and three large meals a day. I'm so happy with my new friends, I dance around in a jig, every time they even look at me. I can't wait to show you more pictures after I've gained some weight. I have something called heartworms but I'm told that I will be treated for them soon. I will be spayed when I've gained a few pounds and back on my feet a little better. I'm a little hesitant at first when introduced to new dogs but I'm learning they just want to play. But most of all, I LOVE people! I'm looking so forward to having a home of my own again. Because this time, I've been promised it will be a great one. Please watch for updates on me.

"Dixie Lou "

Meet Dixie Lou, approximately 5 years old and the newest member of GCDR! Dixie was at one time owned by someone who took very good care of her. She is extremely friendly & gentle, housebroken and very well mannered. We don't know why her original family gave her up but we do know that she was placed in a horrible home. Dixie Lou (so as not to be confused with our previous Dixie) has been living for the past 4 months tied up outside a small trailer. Living on mud, she could only escape the weather elements by getting under the trailer, or as far as her six foot leash would allow. Dixie's plight was eventually brought to the attention of some wonderful ladies who brought her food, vacinations and counseling to the person who had her tied there. Eventually the ladies were told "to just take her" which they gladly did. Transported to New Orleans, by her wonderful friends, she is now safe and so happy to be here. Dixie spent her first day in rescue having a spa day. She was covered in fleas and had extremely long nails. She seemed to really enjoy her bath, having the mud cleaned from her ears and her nails clipped. She happily sat for this photo after her bath with a big smile on her face. Dixie is good with all the dogs in her foster home - male and female. Also great with the little dog in the home and it was reported that she once lived in a home with three cats. We plan to test her with cats this week to confirm that she is cat safe. We were also told that she is heartworm negative and the volunteers who looked after her did give her heartworm prevention once they began seeing after her. She will visit our vet this week and have a heartworm test there just to be safe. Some great family is going to be lucky to have this girl to share their home with. If you think that might be your family, please fill out an on-line application on our site.

Update

Dixie Lou is doing wonderful! She is an incredible pup. She knows sit, stay, lay down, bye bye, potty, no, shake and I'm sure much more then me! She has quickly made herself at home. She's quite funny. She reminds me of myself, quite moody (lol) and shows her teeth just enough to say, I don't like you but I'm tolerating you. Its really hysterical. Such a sweet soul! Today she started to play with the 3 big ones. They are all under 3 and full of puppy energy, you can see she's trying to figure it all out. She starts to play and then when she realizes she's playing she stops as if to say, oh I was liking you for a minute. I can't let you know that. She has totally ignored our cat. She really likes laying in bed with us. But knows to only come up when asked to. Whoever adopts her will be very lucky!

"Gracie"

Hi I'm Gracie. I was adopted from GCDR a few years back. Unfortunately my family feels that current circumstances prevent them from paying enough attention to me so they are looking for a new home for me. Naturally I'm already housetrained p-l-e-a-s-e! How dare you ask! I'm a gorgeous adult lady who has great manners. I'm about seven years old but I can hang with the youngsters at play time. I'm a typical doberlady who will nudge you when you are not paying enough attention to me. I'm pretty and I'm smart if I do say so myself. You'd be lucky to share your life with me. So you better hurry and fill out that on-line application. Remember to ask for Gracie.

"Zena"

Zena is new to foster care, but not to being moved around, given up by one owner, perhaps a backyard breeder, to another home in an apartment without a yard. She is happy to being running around in a yard & playing hard, perhaps making up for lost time or just happy. She is reported to not think too much of the feline variety of pets, preferring to run with the big dogs. She does okay with little dogs that she knows, but barks at others that are passing by. She know's how to sit & offers her paw for a good shake, & listens pretty well for a vagabond kinda girl. Her coat is soft & full despite being a blue girl. Her ears stand very pretty when she hears something that interests her, but mostly she can be heard humming "girls just wanna have fun". She kisses well & is very excited when the leash comes out like all our velcro babies. Zena is heartwom negative, probably 3-4 years young and more than ready to go to her forever home. If you want a energetic, happy former mom, she's your girl.

"Queenie"

Queenie. To fully understand why I'm here, please look at my "before" photos and my story. Basically King and I had a home but no one fed us. We barely made it thru and I must say, although I looked very emaciated, King looked worse. You see I'm smaller so the meager things we found to eat went further on me than my friend King. Despite what we went thru, we are very happy dogs now. We don't dwell on the past too much, that would be a waste of a good day. We have all the food we want now, a soft bed in the air-conditioning and tons of love and attention. In fact, I'm starting to think like the rest of the Dobermans I know that the world really does revolve around me! I'm a great girl, on the petit side but beautifully shaped. I have a beautiful black shiny coat and I smile all the time. I've had my shots and I've been spayed and microchipped. I do need to have heartworm treatment but there are no drugs currently available from the manufacturer so I have to wait on that. But until then, I get a heartworm pill every two weeks rather than once monthly because the vet says that's better for me. My friends at Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue tell me that they will have me treated for heartworms when the drug is available and they will pay for my treatment regardless of whether I've been adopted or not. In fact my contract will say that they will pay for it. So, there's no real reason for me to wait on my new home. Go head, you know you love me, fill out an on-line application! Just ask for Queenie.

"Delta II "

"Delta II" is a 4 year old Dobie Mix. She's been moved around a lot - from the shelter to two different foster homes then to us. We had been called about her and saw her at the shelter. At that time we were not in a position to take another dog - especially a mixed breed. But we told them to give us a call if her options ran out. Well they did, so she came to be one of our dogs. Delta is an exceptional dog. Completely house trained, good with other dogs big and small. Her best friend is BeBe (can be seen on our site). Delta gives soft kisses and can be a very calm girl. But when the fun begins, she joins right in and runs with joy in a game of chase. If you are looking for what we call "a turn key" dog (meaning ready to step into your home with little or no issues), Delta would be a great choice for you. She likes to sit with her front legs crossed in front of her in a very regal position. She thinks she's special and so do we. Delta has been treated for heartworms, is up-to-date on shots and microchipped. If you would like to meet her, please fill out an on-line application and her people will give you a call.

"Bixa"

Hi, my name is Bixa. I'm the new darling of GCDR having just been sprung from a local animal shelter. I am a gorgeous (if I do say so myself) red female dober vixen. I'm young and packed with energy and love. I might not be the best choice for a house with too many dogs as I've been told I can annoy them to death. But one good canine friend who understands my antics would be just right. I'm probably not the right girl for you if you have a thing called a cat. Annoy the animal world I might - but when I'm with humans - I'm in my element. My favorite game is my version of fetch. In my version - you have to find something new to throw me because you're not getting what I previous fetched back. We're working on my gamesmanship skills. I've been spayed, microchipped and I'm up-to-date on shots. If you are interested in possibly adopting me, please fill out an adoption application and mention my name..

"BluBelle"

BluBelle is a 4-5 year old blue, cropped and docked female. She was surrendered by her original family to a shelter stating that they could no longer take care of her. BluBelle became very ill while at the shelter with pneumonia and it was questionable for a while whether she could be saved. But GCDR pulled her and kept her in ICU at our vet's office for two weeks and this gorgeous girl made it. She is now happily in a wonderful foster home receiving the care and love she deserves. BluBelle is spayed, heartworm free, microchipped and up-to-date on shots. This gorgeous girl is now ready for a home of her own. Might that be yours?

"Diva"

Diva and her sister Bette were found by a lady under a bridge in New Orleans. They are approximately 1 year old and are both fawn girls. They were thin and had severely swollen feet and sore pads from their days trying to survive alone on the streets of New Orleans. Who could have just dumped these two babies? And sadly they are both heartworm positive even at their young age. The lady took them home and then asked us to take them and find them a permanent home. Diva and Bette are two beautiful girls with gorgeous soulful eyes. They are on the small side but at their young age may grow more. They have sweet dispositions and are enjoying having guaranteed meals twice a day, toys and a soft bed to sleep in - inside and not out in the elements. You can see from one of the photos that this beautiful girl's feet are still recovering from her ordeal. But she will make a full recovery and be good as new soon. Diva is a little smaller than her sister and slightly more shy. Both girls are easy to handle and will do anything you ask. Please watch for future updates on Diva and her sister

"Shady"

Hi, my name is Shady. I'm a female albino Doberman just in from a north Louisiana shelter. My original owners could no longer care for me so they took me to the shelter. There, a nice lady made sure that Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue knew I was waiting. After a few days of living mostly in a dog igloo (and I must say, they don't do much for the heat) I was picked up and began my journey south. South only geographically speaking - I hear things are looking up for me now. I'm about 5 years old. I'm looking for my perfect forever home - which must include a lot of inside time as the fact that I'm an albino makes me sensitive to bright sun light. I have a lot of love to give and will be ready for my forever home soon . I still have to go to the vet for a full medical exam. I may have some health issues to attend to before I can be adopted. Please check back for future updates about me. And in the meantime, please read about Albino Doberman Pinschers. I am not just a white dog and I have special needs which you will have to understand before I can be yours. therefore I do need to go to an experienced home.

"Sara"

My name is Sara and I'm a blue female Doberman Pinscher who was lucky enough to find a spot in rescue and a ride from a shelter a few parishes away to my new foster mom. I've had a hard life before getting here but something tells me things are going to be very different now. As you can see, I'm currently suffering from a severe skin infection with maybe a little mange mixed in as well. But I am now getting excellent veterinary care and hopefully I'll be looking and feeling much better soon. I'm a sweet girl who has a lot of love to give, but first I must get better. Please check back here for future updates and photos of me.

"Maci & Pups "

Maci and her pups were dumped in a field where they had to fend for themselves for a few weeks. Some people that passed by tried to help them but the dogs were too fearful to allow anyone close enough to catch them. That was probably because other people had not been so kind. When Maci, and her pups were finally plucked from the field by a very determined lady and taken to a veterinarian, it was discovered that all three were not only half starved and heartworm positive but all three had buckshot in them too. The buckshot was discovered when they were x rayed prior to beginning treatment for heartworms. We have been told that a male was also with them but he has not been found. Unfortunately he may not have survived the elements and/or the shotgun.

The wonderful lady who did not rest until the dogs were brought to safety, paid for their hospital fees and treatment while she searched for a permanent solution for these three beautiful girls. When she contacted us, we found their story so compelling, we knew immediately that we had to help. Maci, Karma and Karmin have understandably been traumatized by their horrific ordeal. But as their foster mom, I can tell you they are nothing but a pleasure to have around. They are grateful for every little thing they are given, whether it is a nice warm blanket to sleep on or a bowl of food and clean water. I love spending time with them and watching them go from three dogs that were initially frightened by the site of me to three dogs who now great me with wagging tails and smiling eyes. Please read more about them individually and consider adopting one of these girls into your own home.

"Karmin"

Hi, my name is KARMIN.
I’m a tiny little dobie girl, approximately 6-7 months old. My mom and sister are petit but I’m even smaller. Of the three of us, I am the most emotionally traumatized by my past experiences. I’ve come a long way in the few weeks that I’ve been here. I’m slowly learning that people can be gentle and kind. I don’t know why, but I feel that I might be the favorite of all foster dogs. My foster mom sometimes lays her head in my crate and talks to me and I confess I do give her some kisses. She smiles at me and calls me “Squirt” probably because I’m so small. When I’m in the yard with other dogs I’m the social butterfly. I just love other dogs, large and small and its clear to see that underneath my emotional scars is the heart of a clown. If you want a tiny dobie girl who would be great with other dogs and probably cats, go ahead and fill out an on-line application for me. I’m almost done with my heartworm treatment and will be spayed and micro-chipped soon and ready for my new home.

Update & new photo added:
Karmin has made huge progress in her trust issues. She now climbs up on the patio furniture with us and lays her paws across our legs while we read the paper to her. She gives soft little delicate kisses and very much enjoys being close to those she loves. Karmin is great with other dogs is cat safe and would be wonderful with children who are gentle with her. While restoring the health of a sick dog is very rewarding, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a tortured little soul begin to turn around and feel safe in the world again. As you can see from Karmin's photo, she is growing into a beautiful girl. She is nearing one year of age and is still very petite. But as we all know, sometimes the most priceless things come in small packages.
