"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable.
They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."

"Rufus"
Meet Rufus! Rufus is approximately 18 months old, and is a happy, energetic young man. He loves everyone he meets, including creatures great and small. He is currently living with two dobermans, a schnauzer, and 2 cats, and thinks playing with everyone is great fun! He is still a little unsure exactly how to act around the cats, but has never shown any aggression towards them. Rufus greets everyone with a big doberman smile and a wagging tail. He absolutely LOVES playing fetch, but his favorite thing to do is to put his big head in your lap and get pets and attention. Rufus is already crate-trained and is doing well with learning basic manners such as 'sit' and 'come'. Rufus is neteured, but is unfortunately positive for heartworms. He will be treated in the next few weeks and will be ready for adoption shortly thereafter. Rufus is such a happy dog that he would be happy in any home and would be perfect for first-time doberman owners or anyone that wants a happy-go-lucky guy that doesn't let anything bother him! Being young, Rufus is a bit clumsy and energetic, and may be too much for very small children, but we are working on his manners. All he needs is the perfect home - could that be you?

"Justice "
This is Justice. Justice has touched our hearts in such a powerful way that we could only place a meaningful name on him. Justice is only one heartbreaking example of the inhumane way that some people treat our companion animals. So Justice is what we hope for; not only for our dear boy but for the many other animals who have been abused by our fellow man. Justice's story: We were on our way to pick up a fawn female from a Louisiana shelter when we were notified that a second male Doberman was now at the shelter. We were told that he had completely shut down and needed to come out immediately. Nothing prepared us for what we found. Usually we find an emaciated, worn and torn Doberman who looks like they haven't had a good meal in months (if ever) but nonetheless are so excited to see us when we arrive. Justice was not at all thin. But the "get me out of here exuberance" that we're usually greeted with wasn't there either. Justice had no life in his eyes. He barely looked at anyone passing his pen. He walked out of the shelter seemingly unaware that he was feeling sunshine on his back, breathing fresh air and being loaded into a nice cool car with soft bedding for him. He allowed us to pet and inspect him but didn't seem to know or care that we were there. Justice has severe scars about his face and chest. We sincerely feel that he was offered up as a bait dog to train a fighting dog. Justice was completely passive to the other Doberman that we loaded with him. She even snapped at him when he accidentally invaded her space and he just turned away. Justice sat like a stone for much of the way home. Only the last 15 minutes did he lay his head down and sleep. We put the female up front with us to allow him as much space to relax as possible. We can't tell you much about his personality because he has none at this point. Its buried away with all of his spirit in his sad heart. Justice is still intact and we expect that tests will show he is heartworm positive as well. He's scheduled to be neutered soon and will have heartworm treatment if needed. Other than that, what Justice needs most is time and TLC. We've never really seen a boy this broken down in spirit so we can only guess how long it will take for him to come around. But we have promised to give him the time he needs and our hope is to have another happy ending somewhere in his future. Please watch for updates for Justice.

"Sir Zeus "
Introducing our newest GCDR boy. He is 10 year old Zeus (now dubbed Sir Zeus) to distinguish him from all of our other Zeus's. Zeus came from the Northshore. His mom had to move and relinquish her two dobes. She found a home for her younger female but nothing for this pretty boy. He is reportedly heartworm free. Sir Zeus is a pretty boy with a sweet face. He is good with all the dogs he's met so far. The previous owner said he was an inside/outside dog and completely house trained. He has almost no gray on him and clear bright eyes. He's in great shape for a ten year old and even our Vet says he looks much younger. The only thing I notice about him is lick grandulomas on his feet. Hopefully we can find a permanent home for this boy so he can adjust, settle in and enjoy the rest of his beautiful life. So far everyone who has met him absolutely loves him. Because of his age, GCDR is not seeking an adoption fee but are looking for a wonderful home for this very deserving old gentleman that we can move him into as soon as possible.

"Rocco"
Rocco is a 5 year old, natural eared Doberman. He is very large weighing around 95 pounds. This big boy lost his home when his owner became ill and had to move into an assisted living home and could not take him with her. He has lived as an inside dog and is already housetrained. He's a happy go lucky boy; new to our program so still being evaluated. But he seems to be without any temperament issues. He is little dog friendly and plays very well with the large females in his foster home. The only thing we've seen him try to harm is a fly or bee! So far he hasn't gotten one but don't let them buzz past him! Rocco is neutered and reportedly heartworm free but we will re-test him soon to make certain that he has a clean bill of health. If you are interested in Rocco - please fill out an on-line application. This boy is ready for his new home. Could you possibly be ready for him?

"Lowe"
This is Lowe, an approximately 2 year old (or younger) red male dober boy. Lowe came to be with us when our volunteers just happened to agree to meet in a Lowe's parking lot to exchange a dog who was on his way to our vet. To our surprise we were greeted with this red male Doberman who had been abandoned several days prior in the same parking lot. He was seeking shelter under some outside plant tables. Employees at the store were keeping a somewhat cautious eye on him but he had not caused any trouble whatsoever . Lowe (as we named him) just needed a place out of the sun and heat while he waited for his owner to return. Of course that didn't happen. The store employees were thrilled that representatives of our rescue just happened by. Imagine arriving for one dog and leaving with two! Lowe has tested positive for heartworms and appears to have lived outside most of his life. His beautiful red coat is a little bleached by the sun but will improve. His ears were cut very short - probably not be a licensed vet and probably not with an anesthetic either! One stands, one flops; but as you can see, they do not take away any of his cuteness. Shortly after taking these pictures, Lowe exfoliated the photographer's face with many kisses. He has been neutered, microchipped and has all his shots. We will treat him for heartworms as soon as the drug is made available again to us from the manufacturer. Until that time, he gets a heartworm pill every two weeks as prescribed by our vet to help lessen the load of worms and prevent any new worms from entering the heart. Even if Lowe is adopted before the heartworm medication is available, GCDR will treat him once we have the drug (at our expense). Applications are being accepted for Lowe now.

"King"
Hi, my name is King. I was rescued around Mardi Gras time, hence my name King. To fully understand why I'm here, please look at my "before" photos and my story. Its a miracle that I lived to be rescued. I was hours from death by starvation. At times honestly I didn't want to live any longer but now I'm glad I did. Here are a few things that I have now that I didn't before. First and foremost is FOOD and plenty of it. I even get special meals prepared by many people who want to see me gain weight. And speaking of people - that's another thing I have. People who love me, smile at me and talk to me. Before I saw people at my home but they never even fed me much less gave me a pat on the head. Now I get lots of love and attention and my foster mom even plays with me. I have toys and treats, a bed & AIR-CONDITIONING! I'm thankful for all these things and I'm a good boy. My foster mom says there is even a better thing that I need and will get soon. A home and family of my own. I'm good with small dogs and female dogs. (I love Queenie if you are looking for a twosome). If you have a cat, I could be cat tested. I'm up-to-date on shots and crate trained. I do still need to be treated for heartworms but the drug used for it is not available at this time from the manufacturer. Until then, I'm on two heartworm pills a month to lessen the load (of worms) and prevent any new heartworms from forming. I do not have any symptoms of heartworms at this time and I will be treated for heartworms by GCDR as soon as the medicine is available. But if you live close by, I could be adopted prior to that time so another dog could have my spot in rescue. If you are possibly interested in adopting me, please fill out an on-line application for me.

"Tuck"
Hi, my name is Tuck and I'm named after a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade. I am a gorgeous large black male Doberman - probably around 4 years old. I was seen hanging out at a Wal-Mart store and after a few days people realized that I didn't have a home. Animal Control picked me up but my family never came to claim me. I lived at a no-kill shelter for a few months. I saw lots of small dogs getting adopted but no one ever wanted to adopt me. Once Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue had a spot for me, I was happy to move on with people who understand me and know just how to find my perfect home. X rays revealed that I had an old injury to my tail bone but nothing that will hinder me in the future. I'm a little underweight but gaining fast. I'm heartworm free, neutered, up-to-date on shots and microchipped. I'm crate trained and just love my new soft bed. At the no-kill shelter, I had to live in an outside run and sat there thru some pretty miserable weather. But now I live inside with something called central air and heat which I think is as good as the Saints winning the Super Bowl. I get along well with large female dogs. I have not be "cat tested" or exposed to small dogs yet. Please watch for future updates about me.

"Ozzie III "
Ozzy is a very handsome, one year old Doby boy with a championship, proud stance. His only physical flaw is an overly long (docked) tail with some missing hair at the tip. He is housebroken, sits, and halts at the street corner very well. He does not get the purpose of "come" or "stay" yet - but he will. He is very gentle and lovable, and wants to play with everyone whether or not it is a good idea. His new owner should be strong enough to handle this big young boy until he has completed and mastered doggy obedience 101. He is currently living with his foster mom's 12 year old male, a 10 year old female Sheppard mix and two female Dobys. They get along well with only occasional grumbling from the old man. Ozzy still tries to dominate the females as he doesn't yet realize he's been neutered. Harriet (see our female Dobermans) is his best friend and they really get into chase and roll overs. Ozzy is still a counter thief. We're working on making him an honest gentleman. For now he wears his kitchen thievery like a badge of honor and responds to our reprimands with a handsome smile. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots and microchipped.

"Angel"

Angel is a two year old back natural eared male. Yes Angel is a BOY and that IS his original name. Isn't it cute? Angel lost his home due to home owners insurance restrictions . Not due to anything he did, only because an insurance carrier decided they did not want to insure certain breeds. This boy has been well cared for and is healthy and neutered. He has an excellent temperament and is house trained. Angel is a television star as he was "interviewed" by news crews at the Jefferson Parish Pet Fest. If you are interested in meeting this beautiful boy, please fill out an on-line application and Angel's people will contact you.

"Bear"
Hello, my name is Bear. I'm a 3 year old male doberman (who might, just might) have a little something extra in my bloodline. However, my new family here at GCDR thinks I'm just close enough. I was turned in to a local shelter and could not be adopted from there due to the fact that I had heartworms. Fortunately for me, a foster spot opened for me with Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue and I was saved from euthanasia. I'm neither small nor large for my breed, in otherwords JUST RIGHT. I love to play with other dogs. I'm crate trained, neutered and up to date on shots and microchipped. I'm currently being treated for heartworms and will be ready for my new home around the end of September. Please watch for future updates about me. But if you find me irresistible, go ahead and fill out an on-line application for me and my people will contact you.

UPDATE ON BEAR: Bear has been treated for heart worms and is now just keeping calm for a few weeks until they are completely gone. He will be ready for a home of his own about the 1st week in September. This boy is very very sweet. Just wants to be loved. He would be so happy to be an agility dog. Before being put on bed rest by the vet for his hw treatment, he spent his days jumping over a 4 foot temporary fence that we put up to protect some new shrubs (and clears it with ease). He's a very graceful jumper and resembles a strangely colored deer. This boy could match any high jump champ. But he has never even tried to go over our 6 foot wooden fence. He's just entertaining himself - not trying to leave. We would insist on a 6 foot fence for him just to be safe. Bear gets along great with other dogs. He is an excellent watchman. When he sees anything that goes on outside of the boundary of our yard, he stands alert to let you know something is up or someone is there. I don't think anyone would dare try to cross him but honestly, he's such a sweetie, he'd probably greet them with a kiss.
