"Hebert"

Hebert is a 2 year old natural eared fawn male. He was taken from a local shelter looking extremely mal nourished. Hebert is gaining weight and remarkably has tested negative for heartworms. GCDR or his new owner will need to retest him in six months to make sure he was not infected with heartworms. If he is positive at that time, GCDR will pay for his heartworm treatment. However, we are certainly keeping all paws crossed that this boy lucked out with regard to heartworms. Although fawn dobermans can sometimes have a thin coat, Hebert's coat looks great - despite his obvious neglect.
This is a photo of Hebert taken immediately after being pulled from a shelter. The purpose of posting this type of "before" photograph is for educational value. It is always our hope to reach a potential back yard breeder so that they can consider what could happen to one or more of their puppies. There are simply not enough good and qualified homes for all the puppies being placed on the market and Hebert's photograph is an example of what can and all too often does happen when a beautiful little puppy is placed in a home just based on the buyers ability to pay for the puppy.

Update: We've been noticing that Hebert has a very unusual gait. So unusual that we knew it could not be normal. He's been examined on several occasions now and he has been diagnosed with a brain injury. We know that at some point in this boy's past, oxygen was cut off from the brain causing a slight defect in his motor skills. The most likely scenario is that it happened at birth. The upside is that he will not get any worse and that he thinks he is fine just the way he is. Hebert enjoys a very normal life. He plays and runs as much as the next dog and can jump in and out of a car just fine. He's a joy to be around and gets along well with other dogs. In a perfect world, Hebert would make an excellent therapy dog and could show children with disabilities how he lives with his with his head held high. But what is most important is that Hebert find a family of his own that loves him unconditionally and thinks he is perfect.

Hebert looking much better

Hebert welcomes summer

"Duncan"
Duncan is a three year old blue male Doberman who entered GCDR very ill from an infection of the prostate. He was treated with antibiotics and eventually neutered which completely took care of his medical problems. As you can see he has grown strong and beautiful. He is a delight be be around and is negative for heartworms. Here's what his foster mom has to say about Duncan:

I only wish I could wake up ready to greet the world with as much enthusiasm as Duncan. Like people. dogs come with their own set of likes and dislikes. Some of my fosters prefer to be a couch potato (Ozzy!) . Not Duncan. He leaves his crate each morning like a man on a mission. He runs outside, tail wagging, seemingly with a full day's agenda. He checks every corner of his backyard and all parts in between probably taking notes of the little creatures that have came and gone during the night. Then he checks to make sure his yard toys are all present. Then and only then does he return to give me my morning hug and kiss. If Duncan were a human, he'd drive an off -road vehicle with a kayak strapped on top and he would own a really fine pair of hiking boots and a trail bike. He is not your typical Velcro dobe, although he loves his fair share of attention too. But after spending a few minutes with his head on your lap and some sweet talk, he is content to entertain himself in the yard- playing with the dogs, checking inside pots and such, or just laying in the sun and soaking up its warmth. No condo or apartment dwellers need apply. This boy has his sights set on a home with a yard. He also hopes his new family enjoys being outside with him and shares his love for a beautiful day. He'd make an excellent gardener's companion. He does not dig in the yard. The most damage he will cause is an occasional stepped on petunia or a broken sprig or two. Duncan sleeps in his crate at night quietly. And he is content to hang out inside on hot, cold or rainy days. A prefect home for him would be a home with a lot of outdoor family activity; but one that can also teach him the joy of just lying around and watching a good movie. Duncan gets along well with other dogs, large and small.

"Twister"
Twister is an 8+ year old, neutered, HW negative, black and tan, male Doberman. He is current on all medicals and is ready for a nice, quiet place to call "home". Twister first came to GCDR over 5 years ago when he was found on the side of Interstate 10. It appeared he had been a truck-bed riding JUMPER! He was in very serious physical condition, but with time, attention and love he healed from his injuries. Twister was adopted and has spent the last 5 years in a home as a well adjusted family member. Unfortunately life circumstances sometimes change and the family was not able to continue to be Twister's "forever home". So, our Twister Man is once again looking for a family to call his own. If you are interested in an older, but active, not good with cats, but great with other dogs kind of man please fill out an application.

Sammy

"Sammy"

Sammy is a two year old, black and rust Doberboy who was surrendered when his family moved and could not take him. He has already been neutered but sadly tested positive for heartworms and will have to undergo treatment soon. Sammy is a big male (but not oversized) and very energetic. He would be happiest in a home with activity. He was raised with several small children and is good with them, however, with his size and energy level, we would recommend that children in his new home be at least 6 or 7 years old. Sammy is reportedly cat safe and will be moving to a foster home with a cat soon. Look for future updates about this boy.

Update on Sammy
Sammy is the perfect dog for a person or family that loves a comedian. He can make you laugh on the worst day of your life. He gets along great with all other dogs, small and large. His loves are playing, chewing on toys, running, and eating This boy is very easy going and will go with the flow. He is a joy to be around and will make a wonderful addition to almost any family. Sammy knows some basic obedience commands and will gladly perform them for a treat. When Sammy is not playing or on his daily walk he is happy to sit at your feet and chew on a toy. So if you want a good laugh and daily exercise, Sammy is the dog for you.

"Phil"
Phil is a one year old red male Doberman. He comes already equipped with a few manners and is living with a cat. Phil's rule for the cat is - "if you run, I might chase - but I will not harm anything but your pride" He is neutered, up-to-date on shots and has tested negative for heartworms. Phil was found as a stray by a local veterinarian who gave him a nice place to stay while waiting for a spot in rescue. The vet also provided free medical care for him, including his neuter and a extra heaping dose of TLC. For that Phil and GCDR is grateful..

"Brett"

Brett is a red, two year old, male, Doberman Pinscher. He is absolutely a joy to be around...he is very laid back in the house...likes to lounge around but has some occasional playful spurts. He is a leaner and will grab any opportunity to lay on your lap. If you stop petting him he will make sure your hand somehow ends up on top of his head for more petting. He kisses very sweetly - not all wet and sloppy - he's a pro! He loves treats especially the bones (real ones that are hollow) or kong toys with a treat inside (especially peanut butter...mmmmmm)! They keep him occupied for a couple of hours. When outside he loves to play fetch. Due to his size, he would be better with older children. Before being rescued, Brett was shot in the leg with a pellet gun. The pellets were removed but as a result he has a small amount of nerve damage in his rear leg. He uses all fours to walk and run but will hold his rear leg up when standing. It doesn't slow him down and is not painful to him.

"Theo"
Theo is a new addition to the GCDR family. He is a cropped black and rust male who appears to be about 18-24 months old. We were contacted by a concerned family when Theo was dumped in their neighborhood in a rural area. He had a horrible case of Sarcoptic mange, was emaciated and had marks on his neck, evidence of being tied or chained in recent past. Sarcoptic mange is easily treatable but left unchecked causes agonizing itching for the dog. Theo's feet and face were swollen and parts of his body was bloody from constant scratching. This boy had not known a moment without torment from his condition in a while. He is now completely cured from his mange, has gained weight and is no longer swollen. The only evidence of his past condition being a couple of thin places on his coat which is growing back nicely; in time he will sport a luxurious black coat. This boy is so happy to be feeling well and no longer suffering from constant itching. He is happy to go in his crate at night and sleeps like a log. He gets along well with the other dogs, large and small and blesses you with a big smile when he sees you coming. He has a great sense of fun and has so much love to give. Theo has tested negative for heartworms and will be neutered in the coming weeks. If you think Theo might be a great addition to your family, please fill out an on-line application.

"Griffin"
Hi my name is Griffin. I'm an (almost) 4 year old, black/rust, natural eared Doberman. As you can see I'm a stunning big boy. I'm playful, I get along with other dogs, large and small and I love people. I'm already neutered, heartworm free and micro-chipped. You might say I have it all but I don't - I don't have the perfect home yet. I don't know why I've been so unlucky. I was originally surrendered to a shelter when I was about one. Then I was placed by Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue but sadly things didn't work out there for me either. My foster mom says I'm wonderful and maybe those homes were just not for me. My home is still out there - could it be yours?

"Lucian"
Lucian is a blue, natural eared 14 month old male Doberman. He was picked up by a rescue in Mississippi and brought to us. He is very laid back and loves to be petted and roll in the grass. Lucian will follow you around wherever you go and quietly wait until you notice him before he smiles and wags his nub to be petted. In fact since Lucian has moved to us, he has not stopped smiling. He has not had an accident in the house yet and will be tested with cats soon. He does well with other dogs small and large and already knows some of his basic commands. Lucian is very obedient, always waiting for you to let him know what you need. He is very calm in the house and will make a wonderful addition to just about any home.

"Zeus"
Zeus is a large natrual eared, one and a half year old male doberman. He is already house broken, neutered, microchipped and up to date on his shots. Zeus came to us when he was about nine months old and was placed in a home that sadly did not work out. So now Zeus is back with us and ready for his new home. He has a wonderful, gentle temperment and does well with other dogs small and large. Although Zues is a big boy he is easy to handle. He knows a few basic obedience commands and listens well. He loves to play fetch and spend time with you. He is not a pushy boy and will politely wait for you to pet him. Zeus does still need a little work building his self confidence but he has already began improving and we see more confidence in him everyday. He will need a soft touch as his feelings are easily hurt. Because of Zues' large size he is probably best suited for a home without children. Zues is a truly wonderful boy and is ready for his forever home.

"Jonah"
Jonah is a wonderful little fawn male doberman who found himself at a local shelter when his owners could no longer keep him. He quickly won the hearts of the shelter workers who contacted us and asked us to help him out. He loves other dogs small and large and is well mannered, crate trained and already knows a few basic obedience commands. Jonah enjoys playing in the yard and sleeping on the sofa after a nice long walk. He is well behaved in the house and has not had any accidents yet. This boy could really fit into any family as he is very easy to get along with and wants to please his people. Jonah has tons of personality, always making his foster mom laugh with all of his faces, smiles and expressions. If you are looking for a smaller male with a great temperment Jonah is the boy for you.

"Copper"

Copper is a 4 year old male. Copper was a Katrina dog that came through GCDR several years ago. Copper was adopted out but unfortunately his new family has fallen on some hard times and Copper had to be returned to GCDR. Copper is an extremely large and strong male and needs a firm hand on the end of his lead - or he will lead. Copper has a wonderful personality, ADORES attention, gets along with female dogs, and is good with older children. He is respectful, house trained and a joy to be around. Copper is completely vetted, heartworm negative and ready to find a forever home to call his own.
