"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable.
They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."

"Vangogh"
Vangogh looks like the gorgeous happy go-lucky young adolescent 15 month old puppy, he is, but he is really sad at not being in his forever home where he can continue to run, play & cuddle. He knows basic commands, sit, down, "leave it" and is completely housebroken, good with children & very smart. He has returned to foster care through not fault of his own. He is one of Elci's puppies brought into GCDR before he & his litter mates Botero, Dali, Matisse even had their eyes open. All the other puppies are doing very well in their homes Now weighing in at 75 pounds & growing, he has a beautiful shiny slick coat. As he is still a puppy, he needs a family that will work with him & his puppy energetic self. Vangogh plays well with other dogs of all sizes. He is happy to sleep in a crate for now, but will gladly lean on you & learn to be at your feet or on the sofa would be just fine. He is up to date on everything, in excellent health & is completely ready join you in his forever home. Look for updates or adoption pending, very soon!

"Brody"
My story begins on a frigid day in January when my foster mom found me on the side of the road, starved and dumped, eating roadkill to survive. I was all skin and bones, but wagged my tail and had a smile on my face, so she opened the car door and asked me if I wanted to go for a ride. I jumped right in! A very nice vet got me all warmed up and fed, and took care of me until I was able to go home with my foster parents to start my new life. My foster mom calls me her “tough guy,” and says she named me after police Chief Brody in the movie Jaws. The chief looked death right in the eye and refused to give up, and so did I. But although I may look tough on the outside, I’m a softy on the inside. I get along with everyone – dog and human alike – and show my playful side more and more now that I’m feeling better. I know my basic obedience and am more than happy to sit, shake, lie down, or sit up for anyone. And really, who can resist looking into my big brown eyes? I get excited over food, so my foster parents are teaching me about manners in the kitchen and at the table. I’m still learning about this crate training thing, but I’m proud to say that I’m completely potty trained and have had no accidents in the house. Sadly, my vet found that I’m heartworm positive, so I’m going to have to relax for a bit while he takes care of me. That’ll give me a good excuse to put on a few more pounds, so I’ll be back to my svelte self shortly. So if you’re looking for a handsome guy with a heart of gold who loves to snuggle on the couch, give my people at GCDR a call.

"Max"
Max is a beautiful ten month old fawn doberboy. He is an active pup and going to be rather large when fully grown. Max was fortunate enough to find a foster home who takes him to the dog park daily to run off some of his energy. As a result he is also becoming very social with other dogs and people. Max is heartworm free, neutered, up-to-date on shots and micrcochipped. He's looking for a home of his own and would prefer an active home to give him plenty of exercise. If you are potentially interested in adopting Max, please feel out an on-line application.

"Tuck"
Hi, my name is Tuck and I'm named after a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade. I am a gorgeous large black male Doberman - probably around 4 years old. I was seen hanging out at a Wal-Mart store and after a few days people realized that I didn't have a home. Animal Control picked me up but my family never came to claim me. I lived at a no-kill shelter for a few months. I saw lots of small dogs getting adopted but no one ever wanted to adopt me. Once Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue had a spot for me, I was happy to move on with people who understand me and know just how to find my perfect home. X rays revealed that I had an old injury to my tail bone but nothing that will hinder me in the future. I'm a little underweight but gaining fast. I'm heartworm free, neutered, up-to-date on shots and microchipped. I'm crate trained and just love my new soft bed. At the no-kill shelter, I had to live in an outside run and sat there thru some pretty miserable weather. But now I live inside with something called central air and heat which I think is as good as the Saints winning the Super Bowl. I get along well with large female dogs. I have not be "cat tested" or exposed to small dogs yet. Please watch for future updates about me.

"Dax"
Dax is a nine month old blue Doberman puppy. Tall and lanky now - probably will be a very tall boy when grown. Dax was picked up as a stray and his family did not try to find him. He was a favorite at the shelter and the workers would let him do chores with them. They carried a dog bed around for him to lay on close at hand while they worked. You might say he has supervisory skills. There were tears of joy when our volunteers came to get him out of the shelter and an opportunity to have a family of his own. Dax gets along with all dogs and loves people of all descriptions. He has a skin infection which he is being treated for but does have a beautiful blue coat. Dax was born with an abnormally small left eye and his third eyelid covers it. Although he is not truly blind in the left eye he is "technically" blind in that eye. Dax is heartworm free, neutered, up-to-date on shots and microchipped. He sleeps quietly in his crate (except for some snoring and groans of contentment). If you are interested in adopting Dax, please fill out an on-line application.

"Jackson"
Meet Jackson! This boy is less than two years old but found himself dumped at a local shelter. He also is already infected with heartworms. He seems to be very sweet and rewarded us with kisses when we came to pick him up. He will be scheduled for heartworm treatment soon. Please watch for future updates about Jackson.

"Angel"

Angel is a two year old back natural eared male. Yes Angel is a BOY and that IS his original name. Isn't it cute? Angel lost his home due to home owners insurance restrictions . Not due to anything he did, only because an insurance carrier decided they did not want to insure certain breeds. This boy has been well cared for and is healthy and neutered. He has an excellent temperament and is house trained. Angel is a television star as he was "interviewed" by news crews at the Jefferson Parish Pet Fest. If you are interested in meeting this beautiful boy, please fill out an on-line application and Angel's people will contact you.

"Joe"
Joe is approximately 7 years old and has an incredibly sad history. Joe is actually a Hurricane Katrina victim. Somehow his hips were severely crushed during or immediately after the storm. The vets were so amazed at this big boy's temperament that no one had the heart to just put him down. So they put him together and began searching for a foster home for him - a place where he could recover. Joe was taken in by dear lady that rehabilitates wildlife. She lovingly nursed him back to health and he has lived with her since shortly after Hurricane Katrina. There on the west side of the state Joe lived with his foster mom and all manner of wildlife. Joe's roommates were rabbits, opossum, raccoons & squirrels and he never hurt one of his little friends. Unfortunately Hurricane Gustave and Ike caused even more upheavel in Joe's life. Those storms badly damaged his foster home and forced his foster mom to again ask for help on his behalf.

GCDR recieved a request to assist him with an attached photo of Joe walking around with an opossum. He brought big smiles to our faces. How could we not help this gentle giant? Joe has been to the vet and will return soon. We will do whatever we can do to make his life easier from now own. We have been told that Joe suffers from a bleeding disorder so he may not be a candidate for surgery. Joe can certainly walk and stand but he is clearly weak in his hind quarters and his range of motion is limited. Initial x-rays also revealed that his heart is enlarged - possibily indicating that he has cardiomyopathy. He is scheduled for a full cardiac work-up.

Please watch for further updates and send Joe some good thoughts. Naturally we feel that Joe deserves a home of his own despite his ailments. Joe needs a settled home without too many steps. He'd love to have carpet rather than slick surfaces but says - carpet is not a deal breaker. He loves for you to scratch him on the neck and behind the ears. He can't reach those areas for himself anymore. He'll stand with his head in your lap probably longer than you can sit still. And his favorite things (other than his humans) are big soft dog beds and dinner.

UPDATE from Joe's Foster Mom:
Joe had his cardio work up. Unfortunately, Joe's misfortunes seem to have no end. He has severe DCI (Dilated Cardio Myopathy). He is now on several heart medications which we hope will lessen the burden and strain on his heart. On a tiny brighter note, since arriving with us and being placed on arthritis medications, Joe has perked up a lot. He seems happy now and moving with a zip in his step. I have even seen him scratching behind his own ear! We will continue to shower Joe with love and care and make every day for this boy as comfortable and happy as possible. Please keep him in your prayers.

"Ramsey"
Hi, my name is Ramsey. I'm a 3-4 year old red male Doberman Pinscher who was likely dumped by my previous owner and rescued by a concerned citizen. I was extremely emaciated when first found and had been scavenging for enough food just to keep me alive. I don't know why my original family didn't love me. I get along well with other dogs - large and small and I pay no attention to the cats. I do have heartworms and I'm scheduled to be treated very soon. I'm neutered now and up-to-date on shots. After living on the streets for a while, I'm enjoying living inside now with my foster family who is impressed with my house manners. Please watch for future updates about me.

Update:

Ramsey is an awesome example of how an adult dog can come from an extreme low and just rise above. When he first arrived he was extremely emaciated and very sickly. He is currently feeling a lot better, has gained quite a bit of weight and is getting treatment for his heartworms. He will hopefully be ready for adoption by November. Ramsey is a typical Velcro dobe although he takes it a bit further by always staying just a few feet away from his family so he can always keep a watchful eye on them. He has wonderful house manners and rarely needs any discipline. Ramsey could easily go to a first time dobe owner as this boy is very easy, he sits, lays and is learning stay and shake hands. He is crate trained but would enjoy a home where he didn't have to have a crate. He is not destructive at all and would love a home that could bring him to work or that stayed home with him. He loves to ride in the car and go on walks, really Ramsey loves to do whatever you want to do, as long as you include him, he is happy. Ramsey gets along very well with other dogs but would also be OK being an only dog. He does chase the cat but is easily talked out of doing anything more. Ramsey will need a soft person as his feelings do get hurt easily, raising your voice with this boy is just not necessary. So if you have been looking for that easy, walk in perfect fit kind of dog, this boy is waiting for your application.

"Clyde"
Clyde is a very sweet 3 year old red male doberman. He came from the East Baton Rouge Parish Shelter so we don't know a lot about his history. We do know that he is heartworm positive, emaciated and was probably an outside dog. He has already been neutered and will be treated for his heartworms as soon as we put some weight on him. Clyde has probably never been in a house or car until now and is a little scared of all these new experiences. We have only had him a week and he is already coming out of his shell though. He is getting more comfortable in the car and has learned to look to us for security. He is very appreciative of everything he gets and enjoys his toys and dog bed. He is also very good in his crate and is already working on housebreaking. We hope to introduce Clyde to other dogs and cats very soon so look for updates on this boy as we get to know him better.

Update:

Clyde has become a wonderful companion and has really blossomed into an awesome personality. He is not as Velcro as your typical doberman but for folks who enjoy a tiny bit of space from their dog he would be great. Do not get me wrong, he is still Velcro just not as much so as other dobermans. He will leave your side to investigate the yard, house etc. but will come to check on you occasionally and is very loving. Clyde is crate trained and loves to ride in the car. He sits politely in the back seat and sneaks you kisses when you stop at red lights. He is still working on his basic obedience commands but has come a long way from the boy he was when he first arrived. You would never know that Clyde had a rough life before GCDR as he is a very happy dog. Clyde is now a very confident boy and it shows in his walk. He gets along well with other dogs large and small but is a little on the dominant side if pushed although easily talked out of that behavior. He has been treated for his heartworms and is the epitome of health now. All that's left for Clyde is finding the perfect forever home. Could this beautiful, loving boy be the one for you?

"Bear"
Hello, my name is Bear. I'm a 3 year old male doberman (who might, just might) have a little something extra in my bloodline. However, my new family here at GCDR thinks I'm just close enough. I was turned in to a local shelter and could not be adopted from there due to the fact that I had heartworms. Fortunately for me, a foster spot opened for me with Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue and I was saved from euthanasia. I'm neither small nor large for my breed, in otherwords JUST RIGHT. I love to play with other dogs. I'm crate trained, neutered and up to date on shots and microchipped. I'm currently being treated for heartworms and will be ready for my new home around the end of September. Please watch for future updates about me. But if you find me irresistible, go ahead and fill out an on-line application for me and my people will contact you.

"Deuce II "
Hi, my name is Deuce and I'm a 2 year old male Doberman Pinscher. I took a walk from my last home and was picked up by animal control. My family was notified that I was waiting but they never came to get me. But someone did come! I'm currently living in a wonderful foster home with several other dogs like me. I'm having a good time and love my new digs. But I think I might like a home that is forever and just for me and my family. I'm a tall boy and as you can see very handsome. I'm told I have an elegant look and a sweet face. I have a wonderful temperament and a fair amount of energy. I'm missing a little bit of hair on my chest - likely from scratching. I came in with a few fleas and ticks and thankfully they are all gone now. My coat will look like new soon - no mange to worry about. I hope you will consider me if you are looking for a boy like me, you know, young and good looking and most importantly loyal. I'm up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative and I've been neutered and micro-chipped. If your the right home for me - I'm ready to go.
